Lawyers learn more about stock exchange
More Lao people in various professions are learning about share trading and the operations of the Lao Securities Exchange (LSX).
Members of the Lao Bar Association (LBA) attended a one-day training course on stock market operations held at Rose Hotel la st week. The course was organised by the association and supported by the Freehills Foundation.
LBA Vice President Mr Vorlatsamy Soulipaphanh said “Knowledge of the stock exchange is a new and important skill for us. It is important for our members to have broad knowledge, as we work across such a wide range of fields.”
The training course aimed to promote an understanding of topics such as stock market regulations, the legal role of a stock exchange, corporate governance, and insider trading and short selling.
The LBA is a semi-autonomous organisation which works under the supervision of the Ministry of Justice. It represents and provides a professional organisation for its members - licensed lawyers.
The LBA organises and implements critical legal services and programmes, including public legal education programmes, legal dissemination programmes and legal aid services
Preparations to open the LSX began in 2007 by the Lao government, which holds a 51 percent share in the joint venture, and a South Korean company. Trading on the exchange commenced on January 11 this year.
At present, two previously wholly state-owned enterprises, EDL Generation (EDL.Gen) and Banque Pour Le Commerce Exterieur Lao (BCEL), are listed on the LSX. Shares can only be traded through two brokers - Lane Xang Securities Public Company and BCEL-KT Securities Limited.
