Laos needs to produce over 2.7 million tonnes of rice yearly

Laos needs to produce more than 2.7 million tonnes of rice per year to ensure the sufficient consumption of rice in the country.

This figure has to produce (next five-year plan) rice production till 2015 and at least over 500,000 tonne to be reserved for preparing in emergency for three months.

Now Laos has the population of 6 million and will increase 7 million by 2015. As the result of increased population it requests for food security, especially rice, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

In next five years, the demand of rice consumption will increase 2.1 million tonnes or average per capita amounts to 300 kg and the alternative use of rice representing at 1.6 million tonne or accounting for 4 per cent.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has a plan to expand at least 1 million ha for rice production with its production capacity of approximately 4 tonne per hectare or representing at 4 million tonnes.

Out of the said total amount of which 740,000 hectares are main rice season production with its production capacity of almost 5 tonnes per hectare or the total production of 2.9 million tonnes yearly. Rainy season rice production

Dry season rice production will be planted at least on 200,000 hectares with production capacity of 5 tonnes per hectares and production capacity of 1 million tonnes annually.

To achieve the plan, the ministry determined a measure and focal areas for rice production by properly putting rice seeds with areas such as normal rice planting area, Santhong fragrant rice species, Savannakhet fragrant rice species, Kaynoy rice and brown rice.

The plan will also improve the production capacity of rice to 5-6 tonne per hectare and 4-5 tonnes per hectare in normal area.

To fulfill the plan, it requests 23,885 billion kip fund to carry out the plan.
