Weekly information on banking activities (June 11 - 17, 2011)

1. Mobilizing and lending rates:

- The VND interest rates:

+ The mobilizing rates were commonly at 13.5 - 14% p.a

+ The lending rates were 16.5% - 17% p.a for agricultural and rural development and exporters, 18-20% p.a for other productive and business enterprises, and 22-25% p.a for the non-productive sector.

- The USD interest rates:

+ The mobilizing rates were commonly at 0.2-1.0% p.a for demand deposits, and 2.0% p.a for time deposits.

+ The lending rates were commonly 6-7.5% p.a for short terms, and 7.5-8.5 % p.a for medium and long terms.

2. Inter-bank transactions turnover:

According to the express reports of commercial banks by June 15, the total amount of transactions in the inter-bank market reached about VND 122,979 billion and USD 3,448 million, i.e. VND 24,596 billion and USD 689.5 million per day averagely. 

Most transactions in both VND and USD were overnight term with the total amount of VND 60,269 billion, accounting for 49% of the total amount of VND transactions and USD 2,163 million, accounting for 63% of the total amount of USD transactions.

3. The average inter- bank interest rates:

The interest rates by June 15 were as follows:

For the rates in VND, the average inter-bank interest rates for 1 week and 1 month terms slightly increased by 0.01 and 0.06 percentage points p.a, respectively. The average rates for other terms decreased by 0.03 - 0.32 percentage points p.a.

The average overnight interest rate was 12.75% p.a, down by 0.06 percentage point p.a. The rates for other terms ranged between 12.96 - 13.78% p.a (Excluding demand loans).

For the rates in USD, the average interest rates for most terms were on a upward trend with an increase of 0.11-0.32 percentage points p.a. The rate for 3 month term decreased remarkably to 1.53% p.a from 2.83% p.a (Down by 1.30 percentage point p.a).

The average overnight interest rate was 0.69% p.a, up by 0.11 percentage point p.a. The rates for other terms ranged between 1.26 - 1.81% p.a. There were no USD transactions for demand and 6 month terms. There were marginal transactions for 12 month term.

4. Exchange rate  

The foreign exchange market continued to be stable. The foreign currency liquidity was improved. Commercial banks continued to buy foreign currencies from their clients. The proper foreign exchange demand of enterprises and individuals was fully met. SBV could buy additional foreign currencies from the market to increase the amount of international reserves.

The exchange rate in the market was marginally up. Commercial banks quoted the buying and selling VND/USD rates at 20,700-20,800.
