HSBC appoints sumit dutta as the new chief executive officer for HSBC bank (Vietnam) Ltd.

In May 2011, Sumit Dutta officially assumed his role as Chief Executive Officer for HSBC Bank (Vietnam) Ltd.

Mr. Sumit Dutta

Sumit has taken the reins from HSBC’s former CEO Tom Tobin, who oversaw the Bank’s operations through its local incorporation in January 2009 and drove the bank’s aggressive strategic and organic expansion over the last two years to reach 16 outlets.

Sumit has worked in Vietnam since August 2008, when he took the post of Executive Director for Techcombank, HSBC’s strategic partner. Sumit has worked closely with HSBC Vietnam staff and developed a thorough understanding of the economic climate in Vietnam and the domestic financial sector before taking his post as HSBC’s new CEO last month.

“It’s an honour for me to join the excellent team here as CEO of HSBC Vietnam, and to have the opportunity to work with our customers in Vietnam,” said Sumit.

“In my last three years in Vietnam, I have been continually surprised by the country’s rapid development, the Bank’s constantly expanding operations and the business opportunities available here. This is a country of great potential, and I am confident that HSBC can play a contributory role in the emergence of Vietnam as a rising economic power. I look forward to working with HSBC’s hard-working and highly motivated team to build on the strong platform for future growth; and I will endeavour to continue to capitalise on HSBC Vietnam’s reputation of being the leading bank in Vietnam.”

Sumit has extensive experience in both personal financial services and corporate banking and worked in many countries around the world, including India, Hong Kong and the US.  Prior to working in Vietnam, Sumit was Head of Customer and Sales Management for HSBC in the US, where he was responsible for increasing revenue from existing personal financial services customers.

He also developed and executed a comprehensive sales incentive programme across retail, Premier and small and medium segments to provide bonuses and incentives to 5,500 staff based on sales performance; and assisted in coordinating retail sales activities over a network of 450 branches.

His earlier roles in the US market included Head of Product Management and Head of Global e Business and Direct Sales for HSBC’s Commercial Banking globally.

Sumit holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from the Indian Institute of Management and a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University, India; and first joined HSBC as a Corporate Banking Relationship Manager in India in February 1994, after which he was promoted to head up a flagship branch in less than two years. Sumit worked as the Head of Sales for Eastern India and then Head of Deposits for India before being posted to HSBC Hong Kong in August 2000, where he helped to launch internet banking services for the Commercial Bank in Hong Kong. He assumed responsibility for Channel Development for all countries in Asia Pacific for the Commercial banking business in 2002, and then left for the US in 2005.

Now, Sumit – who enjoys a variety of pursuits such as rock climbing, track and field, tennis and freelance journalism– will bring his considerable energy, personal experience and international expertise to drive HSBC’s continued growth in Vietnam and support the development of Vietnam’s economy.

“I am personally committed to working closely with our clients to bring HSBC’s global resources and experience into Vietnam and to ensure our customers will continue to benefit from our global reach and local expertise.”
