Italy offers export potential

With a population of 60 million, Italy could be a potentially large market for Vietnamese goods, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Diep Kinh Tan.

He called on Vietnamese enterprises to accelerate trade promotion and enhance co-operation with Italian counterparts in order to tap new business opportunities.

Deputy minister led a Vietnamese trade and investment promotion delegation to Italy late last week in order to survey its agro-forestry and seafood markets.

During the five-day visit, which ended on Tuesday, the delegation worked with leaders from the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, its relative departments and the Quality Management Department run by the Italian Ministry of Health.

The two sides discussed co-operation opportunities in strengthening trade relations between the two countries.

The Vietnamese delegation urged ministry leaders and relevant agencies to create more favourable conditions to help Vietnamese agro-forestry and seafood products to further penetrate the market.

Italy pledged support for Vietnamese products and asked Viet Nam to do the same for its own products. Both sides agreed on promoting the exchange of products within a framework of bilateral trade commitments.

The Vietnamese delegation attended the "Tutto Food 2011" fair in Milan and organised a seminar on Viet Nam's trade and investment promotion in Italy.

Italy has long been one of Viet Nam's traditional export markets, and an effective gateway for Vietnamese goods to better access the vast European Union market.

Earlier in 2008, Italy vowed to help Viet Nam boost seafood export to the EU, pursuant to a memorandum of understanding on food quality control signed between the National Fisheries Quality Assurance and Veterinary Directorate and the Italian Ministry of Health's Department of Food, Nutrition and Public Health.

Latest statistics from the General Customs Department of Viet Nam revealed that Viet Nam has exported US$36 million worth of seafood products to Italy during the first quarter of this year, a 64 per cent increase year-on-year.
