EU grants market access to new seafood exporters
The European Commission has granted another 53 Vietnamese seafood exporters access to the EU market.
There are now 379 Vietnamese firms exporting seafood to the EU, said the National Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Assurance Department.
Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers General Secretary Truong Dinh Hoe said he was optimistic about key export markets, including the EU, because of their economic recovery.
Exporters would expand market share in East European and North African countries and India, he said.
Many had already signed contracts which would help the sector achieve its US$5 billion target in exports this year.
However, they would face many obstacles, including protectionism, technical barriers and strict quarantine, food hygiene and safety standards, the association said.
The shortage of raw material would also be a challenge. At present, almost all seafood exporters were operating at 30-40 per cent of processing capacity.
Viet Nam has shown a year-on-year increase of 22 per cent in export value of seafood to $1.1 billion for the first quarter of this year.
In March alone, the export value reached $400 million, compared to $320 million in March last year.
