Ukrainian investors sought

Ukrainian investors have been urged to make further investments in Viet Nam, which was an effective gateway for them to penetrate the ASEAN market.

President Nguyen Minh Triet on Saturday delivered this statement in Ha Noi during a business conference with participation of nearly 200 businesses.

Triet said Viet Nam would always create the most favourable conditions for Ukrainian companies to do business in the country.

Viet Nam remained one of Ukraine's most important partners in Southeast Asia and the co-operation between the two countries had been extended over the past years, said Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych.

He suggested the two countries' chambers of commerce and industry should better faciliate businesses by fostering exchanges of trade information and co-operation opportunites.

Two-way trade has experienced encouraging growth rates in recent years, reaching US$255 million last year, $140 million of which came from Vietnamese exports.

However, trade ties remained untapped, said Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Danh Vinh.

Viet Nam expected to increase its exports to Ukraine, epecially agriculutural products such as rice, cashew, seafood and clothing, while Ukranie hoped to ship more engineering products, machines, iron and steel to Viet Nam.

Vinh called for the prompt signing of a free trade agreement that could lay a firm legal framework for businesses to promote bilateral comprehensive relationships, especially in trade and investment.

Kien Giang's Union of Friendship Organisations Chairman, Le Van Hong, said that southern Kien Giang Province needed investment from Ukrainian firms to develop its key areas of agriculture, seafood, infrastructure, hi-tech and training.

Viet Nam currently has four projects in Ukraine with a total investment capital of $27million, primarily in food processing, packaging and restaurants while Ukraine has invested $23 million in three projects involving agricultural processing, transport and construction in Viet Nam.
