PM Dung holds investment talks with senior Japan, Korea officials

Acting President of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) Yoshito Sengoku has asked the Vietnamese Government to create favourable conditions for Japan's long-term investment in Viet Nam.

Sengoku expressed his impressions on Viet Nam's socio-economic development at a meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Ha Noi on Feb. 25.

Based on the strategic co-operation partnership, mutual understanding and trust, the Viet Nam-Japan strategic co-operation would see deeper and more effective development for common benefit and development of both countries, the DPJ leader said.

He also expressed his country's wish to co-operate in the exploration and exploitation of rare earth and nuclear-powered electricity generation.

Dung welcomed results from a working session between the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the DPJ acting president, affirming his visit would make a practical contribution to bilateral co-operation development.

The PM said he wanted Japan to increase its official development assistance to the implementation of projects signed with Viet Nam, including the North-South highway and the Hoa Lac high-tech park.

Regarding construction of the nuclear power plant, he said this was a strategic project, so it was necessary to come to an agreement between the two governments. He asked both countries' relevant agencies to engage in discussions to devise such an agreement.

Dung also expressed his wish that the two sides have long-term co-operation in rare earth exploitation, and asked Japan to simplify visa procedures in order to make it easier for Vietnamese to study, work and travel in Japan.

ROK investment

The Presidential Envoy of the Republic of Korea (RoK), Choi Joong Kyung, has expressed his country's interest in industrial and technological co-operation with Viet Nam.

Choi, who is the RoK Minister of Knowledge Economy, expressed his interest during his meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Ha Noi yesterday.

He said the RoK would devise plans to encourage young Vietnamese to study technology in the East Asian nation.

Dung affirmed that Viet Nam was looking forward to stronger co-operation with the RoK in the mentioned areas. He urged relevant agencies of both countries to start talking on the application of RoK's "Technology Park" model in Viet Nam.

The RoK minister also met with Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Nguyen Xuan Phuc the same day. He proposed that the two countries intensify the exchange of information to reach agreements and draft projects.

For his part, the host minister asked for the RoK's further assistance to high-quality human resource development, the transfer of technological advances and stronger co-operation in information technology, especially the Government's e-database project that the two countries have signed.

The RoK is a leading investor in Viet Nam. The two Asian nations have similar populations of overseas communities in each other, estimated at 100,000. These communities are said to play a role as a bridge of friendship to promote economic co-operation, cultural exchange and mutual understanding and trust.
