Cattle breeding plans to reach 8 percent growth in value
A conference on developing a national veterinary and cattle breeding programme was held by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) in Hanoi on February 22.
Despite being seriously hit by natural disasters and animal diseases, veterinary and cattle breeding still gained remarkable achievements in 2010.
In the early months of last year, the sector was severely affected by the bird flu, blue ear pig diseases and foot and mouth epidemics, however, they were kept under control, thanks to timely directions from local authorities
The control of epidemics has helped boost the cattle breeding with 4 billion tonnes of meat produced, an increase of 6.3 percent over 2009.
In 2010 the average Vietnamese farmer produced 46kg of meat, 3.5kg of milk and 67 eggs.
In 2011 the veterinary sector plans to control epidemics and fully vaccinate all livestock and poultry.
The cattle breeding sector set a target to raise the average breeding value by 7.5-8 percent, and its portion of the agriculture sector to 30-32 percent over 2010. It also aims to produce 4.2 million tonnes of meat, 330,000 tonnes of milk and 12 million tonnes of livestock feed.
