VN tra fish remains on WWF Red List in Belgium, Norway
Viet Nam's tra fish has yet to be removed from the World Wild Fund for Nature's "Red List" of the Guidance Manual for Seafood Consumers in 2010-11, the Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers said.
Association vice chairman Nguyen Huu Dung said Vietnamese tra fish (Pangasius) was still named in the Red List on websites of Belgium and Norway despite the commitment of the international fund to remove the fish from its Red List one month ago.
Last month, Viet Nam and the wildlife fund signed a Memorandum of Understanding recognising both sides' commitment to ensuring that tra fish was globally recognised as a sustainable aquaculture product.
In the meeting, the fund's Global Seafood Programme Director Mark Powell confirmed his organisation's removal of tra fish from its Red List in six countries, including Germany, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Norway and Switzerland.
Previously, the European-based fund listed tra fish as an endangered species and advised consumers to look for alternative seafood based on biased, scientifically groundless and impractical assessments, as quoted from the association.
Dung said the funds in each country were independent organisations and some of these organisations had yet to make a commitment on the issue.
"WWF International have the responsibility of pursuading and encouraging its member organisations to accept their viewpoint about tra fish," Dung said.
Tran Minh Hien, Director of the Viet Nam-based fund, said the removal of tra fish from the Red List required certain procedures and each country had their own way.
