Trade with India totals $2.6b
Viet Nam and India posted bilateral trade of nearly US$2.6 billion in 2010, a dramatic rise on the $1 billion recorded in 2006.
The figure was revealed by Huynh Thanh Lap, President of the HCM City branch of the Viet Nam-India Friendship Association, at a meeting late last week to mark the 61st anniversary of India's Independence.
India's Consul General in HCM City Abhay Thakur said that the implementation of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement would encourage bilateral trade to develop faster.
He also said he believed that India's ‘Look East' policy would strengthen relations with Viet Nam and other ASEAN countries, playing a key role in economic integration in the Asia-Pacific region.
Lap said that the signing of the India-ASEAN FTA in 2009 had opened up more opportunities for economic co-operation between India and ASEAN countries, including Viet Nam.
Last year, in its capacity as ASEAN Chair, Viet Nam made great efforts to promote co-operation with India and between ASEAN and India.
