VN, Tunisia target $250m bilateral trade by 2015

Viet Nam and Tunisia yesterday agreed to boost trade to reach a bilateral trade value of US$150-250 million by 2015.

The agreement was reached in the Viet Nam-Tunisia Inter-government Committee's 2nd meeting under the chairmanship of the Ministry of Construction.

Deputy Minister Le Duong Quang said this was a necessary meeting since the countries' relationship was prospering.

This year, the trade value between Viet Nam and Tunisia was expected to achieve $18 million, including $11 million in exports from Viet Nam and $7 million in imports to the country, Quang said.

These figures did not match the potential of the two sides as Tunisia was an important market to Viet Nam and played a gate keeping role for Viet Nam in African markets, he said.

Therefore, the meeting aimed to define co-operation goals for the future, he added.

Head of Tunisian delegation Saida Chioui said as the first Mediterranean country to sign an association agreement with the European Union, Tunisia could help Vietnamese products penetrate European and African markets.

Tunisian representatives encouraged Viet Nam to send business delegations to do trade promotion activities in the country soon, Saida said.

In the meeting, the two sides also decided to join hands in the oil and gas sector as a priority of their bilateral economic co-operation programme.

The Vietnamese Government asked the Tunisian Government to recognise Viet Nam as a full market economy, as well as create favourable conditions for the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Group to implement its current projects and search for investment opportunities in the country.

They agreed to co-operate in agriculture, under which Viet Nam would send experts to Tunisia to provide technical training in rice planting, plant protection, breeding, forest planting, supervising and implementing irrigation works.

The two Governments also decided to negotiate an aviation transport agreement in the near future.
