Foreigners warm up VN-Index

Positive buys by foreigners warmed up trading on the HCM City market on Dec. 21. The VN-Index closed up 0.73 per cent to 481.78 points, with 134 advancers outperforming 81 decliners.

Trading volume totalled 68.3 million shares worth VND1.7 trillion (US$81 million).

A number of blue chips rebounded, including Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), up VND3,000; Masan Group (MSN), up VND2,000; Ocean Group (OGC), up VND400; PetroVietnam Finance (PVF), up VND700 and Saigon Securities Inc (SSI), up VND100.

VietinBank (CTG) was the only banking stock to rise with a VND100 gain while Sacombank (STB), Vietcombank (VCB) and Eximbank (EIB) lost ground.

Software producer FPT Corporation (FPT) dropped VND1,000 a piece.

The BVH, MSN and PVF rallies were all thanks to foreign buys, accounting for 120,000 of the 130,000 BVH shares and 49,000 of the 69,000 MSN shares traded in the session.

21 stocks matched their ceiling prices while only 4 dropped to the floor.

In Ha Noi, the HNX-Index fell 1.45 per cent to 115.01 points.

53.1 million shares worth a total of VND961.2 billion ($45.8 million) were traded, with three quarters of stocks falling.
