Fibre broadband makes VN debut
Fibre to the x (FTTx), the most modern broadband technology available, is predicted to make a breakthrough in Viet Nam with its high speed service and stability, information technology experts have said.
FTTx would replace the commonly used asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) for company and individual internet access.
Several telecommunication companies such as the VNPT, Viettel and CMC Telecom Infrastructure (CMC TI) recently poured significant amounts of money into this technology which they sell excessively to enterprises because it is still cost prohibitive for small scale users.
Hoang Anh Tuan, Director of a technological application and production company, said he pays VND1 million (US$50) per month to use the technology.
The faster version FTTH-Gpon, which runs about 200 times faster than ADSL, costs VND30 million ($150) per month.
One expert said the costs would be lowered as internet service providers perfected their technologies. Vietnamese internet service providers are in a race to meet the growing demand for new broadband technology in order to facilitate the use of popular services such as HD Television, IPTV, VoD, Video Conference and IP cameras.
Internet service providers were encouraged to enter the market after a recent survey showed that only 7 per cent of Vietnamese companies have registered to use FTTx out of the potential 300,000 likely enterprises and millions of individual and family users.
To win their share of the market, providers have introduced many promotional programmes to attract customers. For example, the VNPT, the FPT Telecom and Viettel have upgraded their bands and cut fees to lure users.
Experts said the market would likely fall in the hands of these corporate giants because they already have a large number of customers who are using their ADSL services.
However, some experts believe that small companies, such as CMC TI, have their own strengths.
CMC TI has invested in perfecting this service since it entered the market. by pouring more than VND200 billion ($10,000) into infrastructure development and has introduced many cheap packages.
Experts said the overall winner would be the company which provided the best service and quality,
