Donors meet in Ha Noi
The Consultative Group of donors (CG) for Viet Nam opened its annual meeting in Ha Noi on Dec. 7 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem.
Under the theme Stabilising the Macroeconomy and Focusing on Sustainable Development, the meeting is aimed at stimulating frank discussion about the opportunities and threats facing Viet Nam as a middle-income country.
Participants will deliberate on the country's macroeconomic situation in 2010 and directions for 2011, public governance, the transparency and effectiveness of the State economic sector, and anti-corruption.
In addition, they will talk about their priorities for promoting sustainable development including sustainable rural development and a more strategic approach to climate change as well as directions for poverty reduction and social protection.
They will also discuss future development partnerships in the two-day meeting, as Viet Nam enters a middle-income country status.
At the 2009 CG meeting, development partners committed over US$8 billion in support of Viet Nam's poverty reduction and development agenda.
According to World Bank Country Director Victoria Kwakwa, donors had been generous to Viet Nam because they highly regarded the government's efforts to avoid a recession in the context of a severe global financial and economic crisis. It had indeed achieved healthy growth of about 5 percent in 2009 whilst many countries maintained negative growth, she said.
