ATM's to get alarm bells
Alarm bells will be installed in automatic teller machines (ATMs) across Viet Nam following a series of reckless raids by bandits in both Ha Noi and HCM City in recent months.
The East Asia Bank started installing alarm devices in its ATM on Tuesday. Deputy Managing Director of the bank, Le Tri Thong, said the work would be completed early in the new year.
A loud siren will fill the air continuously and lights will flash if an ATM receives a violent impact from outside – or if any banging or drilling is detected.
Alarm signals will also be triggered at the bank's security centre where security people will fly into action.
Vietcombank, which operates the largest number of ATM's, is still in the process of selecting the most appropriate protective technology.
One measure being examined is an alarm activated when the outside of an ATM is suddenly heated by impact.
In addition, the bank will relocate some machines from desolate neighbourhoods to safer places and close some others after 10pm.
ATM's which can be fed cash are most vulnerable to robbery, said Le Huynh Ha, Manager of Vietcombank's ATM Department.
Most alarm systems will be installed inside the cash compartments and powered by back-up electricity so that they still work in case thieves turn off power, according to Nguyen An Long, deputy managing director of Viet Nam Bank Cards, which produces the alarm systems.
He said many would be combined with video cameras and extra alarm messages sent automatically to cellphones and computers.
