Vietnam enters world’s top 10 seafood exporters

Vietnam’s seafood products have been exported to more than 160 countries worldwide, making Vietnam one of the world’s ten leading seafood exporters.

The information was given in a statement by Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Vu Van Tam.

According to the seafood processing development plan, Vietnam will export 1.6 million tonnes of seafood, earning US$6.5 billion by 2015 and 1.9 million tonnes worth US$8 billion by 2020.

In 2009, Vietnam had 396 seafood-processing businesses. However, Mr. Tam said the development of the seafood-processing industry was quick but didn’t follow the plan exactly due to practical difficulties, including the imbalance of supply-demand and the unstable consumption market.

Therefore, in order to develop firmly, the industry needs to carry out research to assess the market and make predictions for the upcoming time, Mr. Tam noted.
