French businesses to seek local opportunities

French businesses which had already invested in sectors such as aviation, infrastructure and distribution in Viet Nam hoped to further enhance their presence in the market, said French Ambassador Jean Francois Girault.

The ambassador made the statement during a press conference yesterday to announce French Week, slated to be held in Ha Noi from November 23-27.

He described the event as a good chance for businesses to establish new partnerships and a move to foster bilateral trade relations.

The event will feature an exhibition of products, services and technologies by 80 French businesses already operating in Viet Nam or wishing to explore the market. The companies will primarily represent the construction, manufacturing, food, energy, hi-tech and environment sectors.

A business conference involving 50 French and more than 300 Vietnamese businesses will be held alongside seminars on private-public partnerships, urban transport, environment and energy efficiency.

The French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Viet Nam will organise a job fair on the 27th to create links between French businesses and Vietnamese students.

Trade between Viet Nam and France topped 1.5 billion euros (over US$2 billion) in the first nine months of this year, an increase of 18 per cent over last year, according to the Vietnamese Trade Office in France.

Key Vietnamese exports to France included footwear, home appliances, seafood and leather products.

The office predicted that trade relations between the two countries would continue to develop thanks to a sharp increase in France's foreign trade.

In terms of investment, France ranks first among European countries and 15th among 93 countries and territories that have poured money into the country. To date, France has 305 ongoing projects with a total capital of $2.9 billion.
