Firms unprepared to deal with imports

Most Vietnamese enterprises have not paid sufficient attention to developing new products that meet consumers' demand and taste so that they can compete better against imported products, a recent survey has found.

The survey on consumer behaviour conducted by the Business Studies and Assistance Centre finds that Vietnamese consumers are not happy with the same designs, old capabilities and lack of attractiveness of several local products.

Vu Kim Hanh, Chairwoman of High Quality Viet Nam Goods Association, said that in the current market context, developing new products was a pressing issue.

She cited an earlier survey that showed only 17.6 per cent of customers questioned in Viet Nam said they loved to buy new Vietnamese products. At a time that new products marketed by foreign companies were large in number, this was a cause for concern, she said.

Leaders of Vietnamese enterprises should sit together and think of their customers' tastes and needs, she said.

The association recently launched a project to support enterprises in developing new products and marketing them with advice from local and international experts, she said.

"The project is expected to help Vietnamese enterprises understand well their customers and regconise their implicit demands. Twenty enterprises who want to launch new products in the market have registered to participate," Hanh said.

The very first step of the project was the lecture by Philip Zerrillo at a seminar yesterday. Speaking on the topic "How to Drive the Market", the expert shared with 150 entrepreneurs his thoughts on how to control the market including the role of new products.
