HCM City sees price hikes

Prices of consumer goods and foodstuff in HCM City rose in early October after the end of Promotion Month in September.

On Saturday, many supermarkets announced price hikes of 5 to 10 per cent of many consumer goods and foodstuffs, especially on imported goods.

According to the HCM City Market Management Agency, prices of imported beer rose by 10 to 15 per cent over August's figures.

The price of imported fertilisers increased from VND450 to VND600 per kilogramme while LPG gas rose by VND14,000 per 12-kg bottle.

Le Phuc Dai, general director of Vinagas, said the increase in the world gas prices caused the gas price hike in Viet Nam. The world gas price rose by US$52.20 to $692.50 per tonne in October.

In Viet Nam, gas prices rose three times with a total increase of VND32,000 or 12 per cent per 12-kg bottle over mid-August.

Prices of local food and foodstuff have also been on the rise. Cooking oil, one of the products supported by the Government's price-stabilisation programme, has risen by 5 per cent.

Sugar prices are expected to increase by the end of the year when sugar demand to serve festivities during Christmas and Tet (Lunar New Year) will surge.

According to the Market Management Agency, pork prices have risen to VND57,000 to VND67,000 per kilo while prices of seafood and vegetables went up from VND3,000 to VND10,000 per kilo.

To control price fluctuations, the HCM City Industry and Trade Department will monitor management at markets and supermarkets.

Le Ngoc Dao, deputy director of the HCM City Industry and Trade Department, said the department had been coordinating with district authorities and enterprises to supervise operations at shops and stalls selling goods under the price-stabilisation programme.

Dao said operations of 98 shops and stalls under the price-stabilisation programme had been suspended due to violations of the programme's regulations.
