Ten Vietnamese retailers enter regional top 500

Ten Vietnamese businesses have been listed among the top 500 best retailers in the Asia-Pacific region in an annual ranking by Singapore's Retail Asia Magazine.

Sai Gon Union of Trading Co-operatives (Saigon Co-op Mart), which owns 46 supermarkets and 12 food stores, topped the list of Vietnamese firms in the trade magazine's rankings.

"This is the seventh time in succession the Co-operatives has topped the list of Vietnamese retailers," said a representative of Saigon Co-op Mart.

She added that this year Saigon Co-op Mart planned to open 10-12 more supermarkets and eight more food stores.

In second place among the Vietnamese retailers named, was Sai Gon Jewellery Holding Company (SJC), while Phu Nhuan Jewellery Joint Stock Company (PNJ) was third.

"We are very proud about receiving this prize for the fifth time," said Ngoc Anh, a spokesman for SJC. "This award is well deserved because SJC had a turnover of VND48.17 trillion (US$2.5 billion) in the first seven months of this year. Our profit over the same period was VND344 billion ($18 million)."

The list of retailers operating in Viet Nam also included Nguyen Kim Electronic Appliance Centre, Mobile World, supermarket chain Big C, department store chain Parkson, the Best Carings Electronics Shopping Centre, convenience store chain G7 Mart and the Diamond Plaza Department Store.

The annual awards are based on the findings of market research group Euromonitor International, which ranks firms according to numbers of retail outlets, sales, market share and ability to develop.

The awards recognise the achievements of firms in Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, Taiwan and Viet Nam.
