Ba Ria-Vung Tau urged to develop port potential

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung urged southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province to effectively exploit its deep-water port system to develop port and maritime services and goods and passenger transport services to become a regional deep-water port entrepot.

At a working session with provincial leaders yesterday, Dung stressed the province's potential due to its ideal location as a key economic gateway to the south, home to a variety of giant economic corporations in the fields of oil and gas, gas-made fertilisers, electricity and steel.

He suggested the province tap its potential to develop hi-tech industry, tourism and agriculture.

"In the next five years, one of our key tasks is to develop the province into a regional deep-water port entrepot," Dung stressed.

He directed the province to work with relevant ministries and agencies to review the planning of the port system to ensure it matches the infrastructure system while focusing on upgrading land and airport traffic infrastructure.

The Government would estimate capital requirements for the project while the province needed to fulfil its land clearance task, he said.

Dung also pointed to the need for the province to develop key industrial products with advanced processing technology to be able to compete in the international market and focus resources to develop into a national and regional tourism centre.

The province needed to accelerate administrative reform to draw more investment and ensure social order and security and environmental protection, he said.

He urged the province to pay attention to human resource training for rural areas and reduce the rate of workers in agriculture,as half of the province's farmers contributed only five percent to its GDP.

The Prime Minister and leaders of relevant ministries and agencies also offered opinions on the province's proposals, including planning of industrial zones, development investment in Con Dao District, development of Vung Tau City, construction of traffic system linking Cai Mep-Thi Vai deep-water port and a number of infrastructure projects.

Concerning the province's socio-economic development, Dung praised the efforts of local leaders and people in tapping the province's potential to develop and achieve encouraging results.

Over the past five years, the province has recorded an average GDP growth rate of 17 per cent. Trained workers account for over 55 per cent of the workforce, with the poverty rate declining to 0.5 per cent.

On the same day, Dung inspected construction work at Cai Mep-Thi Vai deep-water port and Long Son Petrochemical complex projects.
