GDP in northwest region grows 11.6%

Gross Domestic Production (GDP) in Viet Nam's Northwest Region grew at 11.6 per cent to June 30 – 3.79 per cent higher than the first six months of last year.

The region contains 43 of the country's 62 poorest districts and the successful growth rate was revealed at a meeting of the Northwest Region Steering Board yesterday.

The figures showed that Lai Chau, Tuyen Quang and Phu Tho grew at a remarkable 14.4, 14.3 and 13.5 per cent, respectively.

Industrial production was up 14.8 per cent against last year.

Lao Cai Province recorded the highest industrial growth, 29.8 per cent; Son La Province 25 per cent and Phu Tho Province 23 per cent.

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong, who chaired the meeting to review the region's socio-economic development during the first six months of 2010, said that while the figures were appreciated, the board, ministries and local officials must devise policies to continue the growth and quicken the implementation of socio-economic development projects.

The poorness of the region meant that central and local agencies as well as economic sectors should continue their support so that living standards could be gradually lifted, he said.

Tasks listed

The deputy prime minister asked the provinces to accelerate the restructure of the economy and administration reform to create favourable conditions for investors.

The provinces also needed to improve the quality of their human resources; focus on developing education and provide vocational training courses to minority youth and rural workers.

Medical treatment, health care, disease prevention and the network of health clinics must also be improved, he said. The fight against crime, drugs, woman-and-children trafficking should also be intensified.

The board's Deputy Chairman, Bui Thanh Thu, said the board would co-operate with ministries and local agencies to propose a variety of projects during the next six months before their submission to the Government for approval.

These included the support of minorities, the building of houses, facilities for ethnic boarding-schools and the development of the health system.
