Vietnamese May car sales rise 7 pct year on year: Industry
Car sales in Vietnam rose 7 percent in May from the same month last year to 9,386 vehicles, with a domestic manufacturer selling the most, an industry association said.
Ho Chi Minh City-based Truong Hai Auto Corporation took the top position, its sales surging 21 percent from a year earlier to 2,465 vehicles and racing past those of Toyota Motor Corp., according to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association.
The Japanese company sold 2,050 cars in May, an increase of just 2 percent from the same month last year.
For the first five months, distributors in Vietnam sold a total of 40,226 cars, an increase of 5 percent from the same period last year, the association said.
Toyota retained its top position in the January-May period, having sold 11,184 vehicles, up 28 percent from the same period last year, the association said.
Car sales have picked up along with the economy, with annual GDP growth in the first quarter of 5.83 percent, compared with 3.14 percent in the same period of 2009.
The economy is expected to grow 6.5-7 percent this year, after expanding 5.32 percent in 2009, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said on Sunday.
