HCM City’s CPI rises slightly in June

Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) in June rose by 0.35 percent over the previous month and by 4.88 percent from early this year, according to the city’s Statistics Office.

The index represents a 9.55 percent year-on-year rise.

Culture, entertainment and tourism services and housing, electricity, water and construction materials saw the highest increases of all, up 0.93 percent and 0.87 percent, respectively.

They were followed by restaurant services, up 0.57 percent and post and telecom services, up 0.42 percent.

Meanwhile, transport services decreased by 0.62 percent and food prices fell by 0.03 percent from the previous year.

Market experts attributed the decrease in food prices to rising imports, a huge stock of rice and dropping demand for rice from Asian markets.

Prices of foodstuff increased by 0.69 percent, with processed meat, up 0.42 percent; eggs, up 1.96 percent; and fresh seafood, up 0.78 percent.

However, pork price declined by 0.13 percent and beef by 0.20 percent.

In June, prices of gold increased by 3.49 percent, while those of the US dollar were down 0.09 percent.
