Businesses anticipate World Cup profits

Many shopping centers have initiated big promotional campaigns this World Cup season, hoping to boost sales and benefit from fans’ enthusiasm.

Supermarkets and shopping centers are revving up sales campaigns for the opening of the World Cup.

Nguyen Kim Shopping Centre will award two limousines to those who correctly prediction the outcome of the World Cup.

Supermarkets are offering discounts of 5-50 percent for LCD TVs, drinks, sportswear and household goods.

Big C HCM City Public Relations Director Duong Thi Quynh Trang revealed that the supermarket has a promotional program lasting from June 2 to June 20, reducing prices on a wide range of products –LCD TVs, sportswear, mobile phones, dried foods and drinks

From June 9 to June 27, Co-op Mart features price discounts on fresh and processed foods plus sportswear. The retailer has joined forces with prominent brand names to also offer a raffle with awards like six 2010 Vespa LX 125cc MY.

Citimart Deputy Director Ngo Van Hai explained that, from May 15 to July 15, the supermarket will provide awards for customers who pay with Visa credit cards. Customers will receive a voucher for 30,000 dong for every 400,000 dong  spent.

Hai added that every card holder who spends over two million dong and has five vouchers will be given an additional gift, a 2010 official FIFA World Cup T-shirt.

Most home appliance stores are taking full advantages of the World Cup championships to boost sales. Nguyen Kim, BEST Caring, Thien Hoa and Cho Lon have all announced big promotions.

These discount campaigns help to increase purchasing power. 32 inch LCD TVs that allow people to watch World Cup matches are proving to be the best sellers. Market analysts note that the demand for this kind of product is very high, since they have reasonable prices of 6-7 million dong.

Most LCD TVs are discounted up to 40 percent, so sales have increased vigorously.

At Nguyen Kim Shopping Centre, from June 8-17, a total of 5000 microwave ovens will be given to people who purchase LCD TVs.

Vietnam’s cafés are also prepared for the World Cup. Nguyen Chi Linh, the manager of Bom Café, has arranged 3 projectors with 160 inch screens to serve up 1000 clients. She has also bought 150 new chairs in hopes that the football championships will sharply increase the number of patrons. Vietnamese people typically watch football matches together with friends at cafés and bia hoi restaurants.

Linh noted that since the World Cup championship takes place in the heat of the summer, beer will be the top beverage choice.
