Vietnamese tra fish dominates global market
Vietnamese tra fish account for 99.9 percent of the global market share, and this percentage is expected to be maintained over the next few years, says Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
Fisheries experts say that Vietnam could also expand its breeding areas by two or three times in the Tien and Hau rivers. However, more attention needs to be paid to treating wastewater and protecting the environment, they note.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s zoning plan until 2020, Vietnam will have almost 13,000 hectares of fish breeding areas, doubling the current figure. The country will be capable of producing nearly 2 million tonnes of tra fish, earning an export turnover of more than US$2 billon.
