Work starts on service complex

Construction of the Phuong Nam industrial, urban area and service complex, worth over VND1.1 trillion (US$58.3 million), kicked off on Tuesday in northern Quang Ninh Province's Uong Bi Town.

Financed by the Kinh Bac Urban Development Corp., the complex covers a total area of 569.3ha. It aims to attract $1-2 billion in foreign direct investment and create 50,000 jobs when it becomes operational in 2013.

Quang Ninh has always strived to create the most favourable conditions for domestic and foreign enterprises to develop industrial zones in the province in an attempt to industrialise by 2015, said the provincial People's Committee Vice Chairman, Nguyen Van Thanh.

"Phuong Nam is conveniently located near Ha Noi's Noi Bai airport, and Hai Phong and Cai Lan ports, which will facilitate the import-export of goods," Thanh said.

During yesterday's breaking ground ceremony, Kinh Bac Urban Development Corp. (KBC) chairman Dang Thanh Tam called for effective support from local authorities in implementing the project, which was expected to make a great contribution to the province's development, especially its hi-tech industries.

KBC was earlier this month selected as the new investor by the northern province of Bac Ninh for its new Nam Son-Hap Linh industrial zone.

The project was withdrawn from the IGS Viet Nam Corporation by Bac Ninh provincial authorities due to delays in construction. The project was granted investment licence two years ago.

The Nam Son-Hap Linh industrial zone is located next to the KBC's Que Vo industrial zone, with a total area of 430ha.

With 100ha available for the new industrial zone, infrastructure will be built immediately and KBC plans to welcome first customers before the end of this year.

To date, KBC have established a series of industrial zones (IZ) and urban areas nation-wide including Que Vo and Yen Phong II IZs and Phuc Ninh urban area in northern Bac Ninh Province, Quang Chau IZ in the northern province of Bac Giang and the Tay Bac urban area in HCM City.
