HCM City’s CPI rises 0.23 percent in April
Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) in April rose by 0.23 percent over the previous month, up 4.02 percent from early this year, according to the city’s Statistics Office.
The index represents a 9.99 percent year-on-year rise.
Commodities which saw the highest increases include housing, electricity, clean water, fuel and construction materials (Up 1.96 percent), followed by culture, entertainment and tourism services (Up 0.66 percent); restaurant services (Up 0.62 percent); household equipment and utensils (Up 0.49 percent); and garments, footwear and hats (Up 0.38 percent).
Meanwhile, food and foodstuffs reported a decrease, down 2.05 percent and 0.23 percent respectively.
Market experts attributed the decrease in local food prices to dropping prices on the world rice market where the supply is surging, mostly from the two largest rice exporters - Thailand and Vietnam.
According to them, the slight rise in the prices of garments, footwear, construction materials, motorbike parts and housing utensils is the result of the rising input cost of electricity, water, petrol and source materials after the traditional New Year’s festival.
Also, prices for restaurant services were up due to the hot season when high demand for fresh drinks sets in, they explained.
