‘Rescue road' to boost flood control

Construction of a coastal rescue road project worth VND2.54 trillion (US$132 million) kicked off in the central province of Quang Nam on Sunday.

The project, with funds mobilised from Government bonds, seeks to prevent flooding and facilitate rescue efforts during natural disasters.

The 33-km road will run through natural calamity-prone coastal districts of Thang Binh and Nui Thanh and Tam Ky Township.

The road will be 38m wide with four major lanes and two lanes for rescue vehicles.

Construction of the project is expected to take two years.

Once completed, the road will connect tourists' favourite roads along Da Nang City, Hoi An ancient town and other economic locations in Quang Nam.

Tropical storms head for north, central regions

This year's rainy season is forecast to be complicated and tough with strong storms, floods and landslides likely to hit northern and central provinces, according to a statement released by the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting yesterday.

The centre's Director, Bui Minh Tang, said that seven tropical storms were expected to hit Viet Nam, the same number as last year. However, he said that their nature would be unpredictable due to erratic conditions this year, such as early low tropical pressure in southern provinces in January.

Tang said that flooding would occur in northern provinces when river levels reached their highest by the end of July. Central provinces between Thanh Hoa and Binh Thuan were forecast to be hit by floods in August and September and southern provinces in October.

He warned that it was necessary to take preventive measures against strong storms.

On the same day, the provincial People's Committee announced that VND1.4 trillion ($72.8 million) would be invested in dredging Truong Giang River at the section running through Duy Xuyen, Thang Binh and Nui Thanh Districts and Tam Ky Town.

The three-year project is aimed at stopping flooding and water logging in the area, reducing damage to agricultural production as well as facilitating water transport to the province-based Chu Lai Economic Zone.

The two projects are part of a general project on population relocation and natural disaster prevention and control for the province's coastal areas which got the nod from the Prime Minister in 2007.

The general project, which will last through 2020, has a total investment capital of nearly VND4 trillion ($208 million) raised from the Government bonds.

It will cover nearly 14,000ha in 15 communes in three coastal districts of Duy Xuyen, Thang Binh and Nui Thanh and Tam Ky Town in the province, according to Do Xuan Dien, Deputy Head of the general project's management board.

"The general project is expected to help18,000 households move to safer areas, and rebuild infrastructure facilities and houses to ensure their safety during rainy and storm seasons," he said.

"Resettlement buildings as well as essential infrastructure are being built to help relocated people have as least disruption as possible to their lives," he said.
