First public housing nears completion
Eight hundred State-built apartments for low-income families in Ha Noi will be ready in the next two months, reported the municipal Construction Department Vice Director Nguyen Quoc Tuan.
These apartments, located in the Viet Hung New Urban Area, in Long Bien District, would be the city's first social housing project, with a total investment of VND156 billion (US$8.2 billion) from the State budget, said the vice director.
The city authority will provide documents relating to usage and management, renting and selling prices and those qualified to buy or rent the houses by next month.
Each apartment will be 35 to 70sq.m and cost about VND150-300 million ($7,900-15,800). By paying 20 per cent of construction costs in advance, tenants will be able to own their houses after renting for 10 years. However, beneficiaries will not be able to transfer their residences during the rental periods, except for to their heirs.
Low-income earners including civil servants and army personnel can register to rent or buy these social houses if they currently have no house, or if their current houses are too small, at less than 5sq.m per person.
However, because of the high demand, the authorities would have to review and publicise lists of the eligible tenants, said Tuan.
Two other projects have been approved for construction in Gia Lam and Ha Dong districts, which will provide an extra 3,000 apartments for low-income families.
This year, Ha Noi's housing demand is expected to total 7 million square metres, equal to 120,000 houses.
