Businesses struggle to get foothold

Local businesses are still encountering difficulties with accessing the potentially strong domestic market, according to Ha Noi's Young Business Association chairman Bui Van Quan.

He blamed the situation on the small scale of enterprises, weak trademarks and poor product designs.

Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman Vu Tien Loc agreed. There was a lack of a strong relationship between local manufacturers and distributors. This in turn affected consumer demand and weakened Vietnamese businesses' competitiveness in the face of much stronger foreign rivals, he added.

Luu Duy Dan, Deputy Chairman of the Viet Nam Craft Village Association, called for closer co-operation between enterprises, as well as more frequent dialogues with associations and authorities that could help them address market penetration.

Ha Noi Business Association vice chairman Nguyen Tuan Hai suggested businesses build an ‘internal' market amongst themselves for each other's goods.

Businesses could co-operate not only as buyers, but also as each other's investors, Hai said.

The Deputy General Director of Hapro, Tran Manh Canh, said that the company was working on a new strategy. Hapro has 30 affiliate enterprises with 7,000 workers and an integrated business model that had helped it increase market share, step up production, reduce competitive pressure, and solidify links between producers and distributors.

Canh also urged the Government to adopt policies to assist enterprises in developing distribution systems and infrastructure to facilitate the flow of goods to rural areas. This would allow people to access goods more easily while reducing transport costs for enterprises, which would provide more jobs for rural workers.
