Agreements on Japanese ODA signed in Hanoi

Deputy Minister of Finance Tran Xuan Ha signed 5 agreements on official development assistance (ODA) with the Head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, Monotori Tsuno, in Hanoi on March 18.

The agreements, which have a total value of 25.882 billion Yen, are part of the second phase of Japan’s ODA commitment to Vietnam in the 2009 fiscal year.

The money will be used to build a new terminal at Noi Bai International Airport, a new highway between Noi Bai Airport and Nhat Tan Bridge in Hanoi and Cuu Long Bridge in Can Tho Province, and upgrade National Highway No.1 and Hoa Lac high-tech park.

The Japanese Government remains the number one ODA donor to Vietnam, with a total contribution of 1,394 billion Yen over 18 years. This year the Japanese Government increased its commitment to a record 145.613 billion Yen.

Japanese ODA to Vietnam has focused mainly on infrastructure, power, transportation, seaports and telecommunications. Projects like the Pha Lai thermal power plant, the Phu My thermal power plant, the Ham Thuan-Da Mi hydro electric-power plant, national highway No.10 and N0.18, Binh bridge, Hai Phong seaport, Tan Son Nhat Airport, Bai Chay Bridge and the East-West highway in Ho Chi Minh City have made major contributions to the nation’s economic growth in recent years.
