Industrial production shows positive signs in early 2010

Industrial businesses in the capital have rushed in the early days of the Lunar New Year to move forward with production in a move to contribute to the targeted GDP growth of 10 percent for this year.

General director of Son Ha International Joint Stock Company Le Vinh Son said his company produced 600 sets of stainless steel basins on the first work day after the Tet holiday.

Earlier this year, the company signed an order for 30 containers of stainless steel pipes for export to the US.

Son said the company hoped to hold a place in both the domestic market and foreign markets with a diverse range of products such as stainless steel basins, kitchen equipment and steel pipes.

He said it had already exported 2,000 tonnes of these products to the US, and another 1,000 tonnes to the Middle East and Europe.

Son Ha has VND150 billion (US$8.1 million) in registered capital and is one of the country's leaders in the production and processing of stainless steel products.

Last year, it reached VND1.25 trillion ($67.5 million) in turnover.

This year, it expects to increase its turnover to VND1.5 trillion ($81 million) and will focus on producing stainless steel basins and pipes at a yearly growth rate of 20 percent.

It also intends to promote environmentally friendly products.

An ebullient atmosphere was also observed at the Dong Anh Chain and Freewheel Company, which has targeted an increase in turnover and profit of 18 and 23 percent higher than last year, respectively.

Phan Tan Binh, the company's general director and chairman of the management board, said its industrial production value increased by 10 percent last year, while turnover was 15 per cent higher against the previous year despite the global recession.

It also delved into advanced technology by investing VND40 billion ($2.2 million) in a waste water treatment system and modern equipment.

In a visit to industrial businesses in the capital, vice chairman of the municipal People's Committee Nguyen Huy Tuong was encouraged by these results.

However, he said the firms should pay attention to price and quality.

Figures from the city's Statistics Department showed that its industrial production value in the first month of the year reached VND7.4 trillion ($400 million), 16.3 percent higher than the same period last year.
