First flight marked
The first international flight to Can Tho Airport yesterday brought 189 overseas Vietnamese passengers from Taiwan back home to celebrate the Tet (Lunar New Year) festival.
They were greeted with a welcome ceremony organised by the city leaders. Most of the passengers were women from Mekong Delta provinces who have married Taiwanese men.
Nguyen Thanh Son, deputy head of the municipal People's Committee, was at the airport to receive the passengers.
He said the new route operated by national carrier Vietnam Airlines was an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese to return home quickly and economically.
"The flight's success shows that Can Tho Airport can serve short international flights and will be able to receive long-distance flights later," Son said.
Luu Minh Chung, head of the Vietnam Airlines branch in Can Tho, said the first international flight to the city was a pilot project for opening up international routes to the city. A terminal to receive long-distance flights was due for completion later this year, he added.
The second international flight from Taipei will arrive in the city today and two return flights from Can Tho to Taipei will leave on February 20 and 21, he said.
