Farmers, fishermen get Lunar New Year off to a good star
The Lunar New Year has brought in good productivity tidings from farmers and fishermen around the country.
Farmers in the Mekong delta province of Dong Thap harvested their winter –spring crop on the first day (February 14) at an average yield of 7.7 tons per hectare.
Duong Quoc Nghia, deputy head of the province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said farmers were very excited because they were selling their produce for over VND5,000 a kilogram.
The higher prices of tangerines, mangoes and longans during the Tet festival also yielded good profits for farmers, said Ta Van Hoi, chairman of the Lai Vung District People’s Committee.
Meanwhile, farmers in the Mekong delta province of Hau Giang have also earned handsome profits as the price of grapefruits soared to VND150,000 apiece, said Nguyen Van Dong, director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
As an annual tradition, fishermen in the central province of Quang Ngai went to sea on the third day (February 16) with ceremonial prayers for good weather and a year of good catches.
In the southern province of Ca Mau’s Tran Van Thoi District, fishermen also went out to sea early because fish and other marine creatures are abundant at this time of the year, said Le Minh Nhut, deputy chairman of the district People’s Committee.
