Japan, ADB provide US$3.6 billion for Vietnam
The Japanese Government and the Asian Development Bank (ABD) are committed to providing US$3.6 billion ODA to help Vietnam expand Noi Bai International Airport and build roads.
The commitment was announced at the Consultative Group (CG) Meeting in Hanoi on December 3.
At the meeting, Minister of Planning and Investment, Vo Hong Phuc reaffirmed that in 2009, with its effort and international support, the Vietnamese Government has overcome difficulties caused by the global economic downturn, natural disasters and floods. He spoke of Vietnam’s effective coordination with donors in implementing ODA projects and programmes.
Victoria Kwakwa, World Bank director in Vietnam, said that such achievements in 2009 show Vietnam’s ability to overcome difficulties and challenges. However, there still remain a number of snags in identifying the impact of the global economic crisis on Vietnam’s macro-economy, poverty reduction, job generation, social welfare, the Government’s stimulus package and the private sector’s role in economic growth and climate change.
The CG meeting attracted representatives from 34 countries and 10 international development organizations.
