HCM City’s IT turnover equals 40% of nation’s total

Ho Chi Minh City is home to almost 12,000 IT businesses who are expected to earn around 35 trillion VND by the end of 2009 or 40 percent of the country’s total IT revenue.

Of this figure, 4,000 hardware businesses are likely to contribute nearly 29 trillion VND and 8,000 software and digital businesses around 6 trillion VND, reported the Municipal Information and Communications Department.

Since 2000, the city has adopted a number of policies and measures to attract domestic economic sectors and foreign investors to develop the city’s IT and software industry.

Founded in 2001, the 430,000 m2 Quang Trung Software Park is now home to 104 IT businesses, of which 55 percent are foreign owned, with a total investment of 6.6 trillion VND. They employ 3,500 technicians and engineers and their annual turnover now reaches 1 trillion VND.

The city has five software zones, namely the Quang Trung software park, the Sai Gon software park, the E-Town 1 & 2 zones and the HCM City hi-tech zone.

Two other big software projects - the 610 million USD Vietnam-Japan Knowledge Park and the 1.2 billion USD Thu Thiem Software Centre - are currently being built in the city.

The city has also invested 330 billion VND in applying IT to the city’s authorities. At present, around 96 percent of the city’s public employees use computers at work and the municipal authorities provide 337 online public services.

HCM City is leading the nation in applying IT with 96 percent of households using computers, 600,000 families and around 66,000 businesses registered for broadband Internet services and more than 35,000 businesses with their own websites.
