Germany protests against EC decision on Vietnamese shoes

The Federation of German Shoe Companies (HDS) has warned that leather shoes imported from Vietnam and China will become more expensive in the next few years. 

The reason is due to the European Commission’s recent decision to impose an anti-dumping tariff on leather shoes imported from China and Vietnam despite the European Union’s anti-dumping committee’s rejection of the idea.

The chairman of HDS, Ralph Rieker said that the German footwear industry will lose EUR400 million each year and German consumers will have to share this burden.

Many retailers, and consumers in the EU as well as famous manufacturers in Germany such as Adidas and Puma have protested against the EC’s decision. Currently, up to 50 percent of shoes in the German market are imported from China and Vietnam. The European Footwear Alliance (EFA), has also complained about the EC’s move and has called on the body to abolish the anti-dumping tariffs.
