VN applauds EU anti-dumping committee’s decision

Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade has applauded the European Union’s anti-dumping committee’s recent rejection of an European Commission (EC) proposal to extend dumping duties on shoes imported from Vietnam and China .

On Nov. 19, 15 EU member states opposed the plan to extend the duties for 15 months more while ten other members supported the Commission and two countries abstained.

The disapproval majority resulted a sensible and rational decision as many associations, organisations, individuals and EU businesses, including those in the shoe industry, have voiced opposition to the duty extension.

The Vietnamese ministry asked the EC to respect the opinion of the majority of EU member countries, organisations and individuals, and to lift dumping duties on Vietnamese leather capper shoes exported to the EU as soon as possible.

In October 2008, the Commission, which oversees trade policy for the 27-member European Union, extended duties of up to 16.5 percent on imports of Chinese leather shoes and 10 percent on those made in Vietnam.
