Cutback on coal exports planned to meet domestic demand

Vietnam will cut coal exports gradually to make sure local supply can meet fast growing demand in the country, the government said.

Under a new plan for the coal industry, Vietnam would have to start importing coal in 2013 as domestic coal would not be able to keep up with rising demand.

Domestic consumption is projected to climb to 90 million tons in 2015 from just under 20 million tons this year as a series of new thermal power plants in the north of the country will have opened by then.

Vietnam is expected to produce 40 million tons of coal this year, around half of which will be exported.
