Agricultural export earnings to meet yearly target

The value of agricultural, forestry and aquatic exports is expected to exceed the yearly target, according the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The export value is predicted to reach US$15.3 billion this year - $1.3 billion above the yearly target - but lower than the $16.52 billion export value in 2008. (Photo: VNS)

So far this year, exports have earned $13 billion, including $7.5 billion from farm produce, $3.5 billion from seafood and $2.2 billion from forestry products, the ministry said.

However, agricultural, forestry and aquatic exports reduced year-on-year by 8.8 per cent to $12.7 billion in the first ten months of this year.

Average export prices of agricultural, forestry and seafood products - including rice, rubber, coffee, cashews and pepper - surged significantly in early November compared with September and October, the ministry said. Five per cent broken rice increased by $30 per tonne, while rubber increased in value by $50 per tonne.

The ministry said it expected total exports to earn $2.5 billion more in value by the end of the year.

However, the ministry also said agricultural, forestry and seafood exporters should concentrate on quality to meet high import standards.

The ministry said the biggest challenges facing the agricultural, forestry and fisheries sectors were high production costs, backward technology and poor production conditions.

Le Xuan, head of the ministry's Agricultural, Forest and Seafood Processing and Trade Department, said the biggest profits were made from processed goods but that 90 per cent of agricultural, forestry and seafood exports were unprocessed.

Diep Kinh Tan, deputy minister of agriculture and rural development, said the agricultural, forestry and seafood sectors had invested in improved processing technology and in building trade marks, but that they still had some way to go.
