Stock market building kicks off construction
The stock market in Laos, the first of its kind, has kicked off construction and is expected to operate in mid-next year.
The building site is on T4 Raod, located at Ban Phonethanh Neua, Saysettha district, Vientiane Capital, opposite the Lao International Trade Exhibition and Convention Centre (Lao ITECC).
A ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the stock market took place in Vientiane Capital, on 29 September.
The construction work will begin this month and is scheduled to complete in June 2010 at the latest.
Standing Deputy Minister, Mr. Somsavat Lengsavad, Governor of the Bank of the Lao PDR Mr. Phouphet Khamphounvong, and high-ranking officials attended the ceremony.
Mr. Phouphet, who is also Vice-President of the Lao Securities Exchange Commission, said that the construction of the stock market was a remarkable part of the plan for establishing the stock market.
“The Central Bank is responsible for the stock market construction, which hold 51 per cent of shares and the rest is held by the Korean Stock Market, based on the agreement signed by the two governments in Luang Prabang province, in 2007,” said the Governor of the Bank of the Lao PDR.
