One third of coffee plants too old, Vinacafe says
Vietnam will face a coffee production crisis by 2013, Vietnam National Coffee Corporation (Vinacafe)’s Deputy General Director Nguyen Van Truong said Tuesday.
Nearly 140,000 hectares or nearly 28 percent of the nation’s coffee farms have a low yield as they were planted over 20 years ago, according to Truong.
The percentage is expected to jump to nearly 50 percent by 2013, he said.
Vinacafe has advised its affiliates and farmers to cultivate 500,000 more hectares of coffee plants to guarantee an annual yield of one million tons.
At present, Vietnam has about 506,000 hectares of coffee trees, nearly 470,000 hectares of which are located in the Central Highlands.
