Traffic congestion dogs southern port
Ho Chi Minh City’s infamous traffic congestion is creating problems at Cat Lai Port, the city’s busiest port.
For the last three days, the two-lane Highway 25B that leads to the port has been at a virtual standstill, with little cargo able to be loaded and unloaded at the port.
The poor condition of road and a slight increase in cargo transport are contributing to the blockage, said Ngo Minh Thuan, deputy director of port manager Tan Cang Saigon Company.
Thuan said the traffic congestion on the highway has been steadily worsening for the past few weeks, affecting the operations of the port, which carries about 85 percent of the cargo shipped into and out of HCMC.
The log-jam of thousands queuing container trucks has even backed up to reach a section of National Highway 1A, Vietnam’s main north-south artery.
The volume of cargo unloaded at Cat Lai Port rose by 8 percent in the first six months of this year, Thuan said, increasing the number of container trucks traveling along Highway 25B, a narrow thoroughfare easily blocked by just one breakdown.
To resolve the traffic problem, port authorities are planning to send rescue vehicles and police to improve the flow traffic along Highway 25B, he said.
