Hanoi’s trade development programming

Markets will be set in new areas

Under the programme on developing the network of wholesale and retail markets in Hanoi by 2020, new markets will not be built in the current four districts of the inner city, but will be developed in suburban areas of the city.

No more new markets in inner city

The programme on developing the network of wholesale and retail markets in Hanoi by 2020 was submitted to the Hanoi People’s Committee late last week.

Though the programme has not been approved since it is still necessary to wait for the master plan on Hanoi’s socio-economic development to be approved first, Nguyen Huy Tuong, Deputy Chairman of Hanoi People’s Committee, who chaired the compilation of the programme, said that the viewpoints on trade development of the capital are still worth considering.

Under the programme, the network of wholesale and retail markets will include 489 markets, 162 trade centres, 178 hypermarkets and supermarkets.

Tuong said there will be no big changes in the four districts of the inner city. No new market will be built in the districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Hai Ba Trung, while some of the operational 402 markets will be upgraded into shopping centres. Meanwhile, retail markets of farm produce, fresh food to serve daily life will be upgraded. Small markets will gradually be upgraded and developed into supermarkets, food stores or convenience stores.

The programme has also mentioned the upgrading of the 62 operational supermarkets, building new hypermarkets and second-class and third-class supermarkets on sites of old markets which have the area of more than 3,000 square metres, on trade streets and on the areas where agencies were once located and then moved to other places.

Expanding markets in suburb areas

The most important point of the programme is that wholesale centres and markets will be relocated from the inner city.

It is expected that there will be two wholesale markets that specialise in selling farm produce and general food at the regional level, which will be located in Gia Lam and Thuong Tin districts. The markets will exist together with markets at city level which will be located in Hoang Mai, Tu Liem, Ung Hoa, Ba Vi and Me Linh districts.

The programme also mentions the building of new first and second class supermarkets in new urban areas in Tay Ho, Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai, Long BIen and Ha Dong district, Son Tay town, Tu Liem, Hoai Duc and Dan Phuong Districts.

The number of first and second class hypermarkets in suburban areas will depend on population development.

Tuong said that Hanoi may consider building five general wholesale centres at the regional level which will be located in Gia Lam, Soc Son, Chuong My, Thach That and Thuong Tin districts with 150-200 hectares for each.

At the national level, the programme compilation has suggested two shopping centres in Dan Phuong and Thach That district with the area of 500,000 square metres for each centre.

The southwestern area of Hanoi may be chosen as the place for an international trade centre, which can connect with the National Convention Centre, hotels and representative offices.
