Hanoi resolves to prevent economic downturn

The Standing Committee of the Hanoi City Party’s Committee held its 16th meeting on July 6 to review the implementation of socio-economic development, security and national defence tasks in the first half of this year and to set key tasks for the remaining months.

Participations agreed that in the reviewed period, despite facing difficulties due to    the impact of the global economic downturn, the municipal Party’s Committee and administration organizations gave people advice and guidance on how to carry out effective measures to maintain the city’s economy growth. GDP has increased by 4.12 percent, the lowest level growth in recent years but still higher than the national average level. Hanoi has implemented many social welfare policies and generated 63,500 jobs.

However, some economic indicators showed a downward decline. For example, agricultural production was down by 5.6 percent and export earnings by nearly 10 percent. Other issues such as land management, urban order, environmental protection and administration reform saw little progress.

In the second half of this year, it is estimated, the number of unemployed people may futher increase. Therefore, Hanoi will focus on implementing nine big programmes, five key tasks and two spearheads. The city will make all-out efforts to prevent economic downturn, maintain growth, ensure social security and accelerate preparatory activities for the ceremony to mark 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi with the aim of the GDP growth rate in the second of this year to 7.5 or 8 percent, increasing export earnings by 10 percent and helping more than 20,000 households escape poverty.
