Vietnam to keep tabs on illegal Chinese imports

Vietnam will carry out tighter checks at border gates and trails in Northern provinces bordering China. The checks are to prevent the illegal import of unsafe goods and commodities including garments, consumer goods and children’s toys.

The deputy head of the Central Steering Board for Fighting against Smuggling, Imitations and Commercial Fraud, Nguyen Cam Tu, has recently requested relevant authorities in cities and provinces nationwide to carry out tighter checks on the safety of imported garments and consumer goods, especially toys for children coming from Guangzhou, China.

The checks, which will be focused on border gates and trails, will last until the end of this year.

In related news, the Quang Ninh Province Department of Industry and Trade recently revealed that exports of agricultural goods at Mong Cai, Hoanh Mo and Bac Phong Sinh border gates decreased sharply over the first five months of the year, compared with the same period last year.

The department blamed the decline on China’s tighter customs formalities to prevent the import of unknown –origin goods and commodities into the country.

China also claims that many Vietnamese frozen foods contain additives imported from third countries, which cannot be exported to China. The country’s authorities have recently halted the import of this kind of foods on food hygiene grounds.

Rubber exporters are also suffering, as since May, China has begun to apply tighter management policies on foreign exchange payments via banks at border gates, leading to delayed payments to Vietnamese rubber manufacturers, especially those who had exported large orders to Chinese partners.

Exporters of tapioca starch are also facing difficulties, as China has recently imposed an import tariff of 30 percent.
