Opportunity to corner Canada’s garments market

The Vietnamese Trade Office in Canada has recommended enterprises to come up with new business strategies to gain a foothold in the Canadian market.

According to the Canada-based Vietnamese Trade Office, Canada is a potential market for Vietnam’s garment and textile exports as it consumes a high level of garments and textiles, more than 20 billion Canadian dollars per year. Canada is now one of the largest garments and textiles importers per capita in the world.

Among the imported garments and textiles products, low and medium-cost products account for a considerable share of the market. Furthermore, Canadian consumers like to use products made of natural fibre at competitive prices as they prefer comfortable clothes.

However, in order to corner this market, Vietnamese enterprises need to work out effective business strategies to gain a foothold in this lucrative market.

To reach that goal, Vietnamese businesses should focus on making new products of different designs to ensure that they are also of good quality like other products of the same kind which are popular with consumers in this market.  When seeking out importers, they should spotlight their companies and products specifically and provide information on prices, images of products, technical specifications, certificates for latest products, contact emails addresses.

According to the Vietnamese Trade Office in Canada, Canadian businesses attach a lot of importance to transactions by e-mail because they consider it an effective tool. This kind of transaction method can evaluate a client response more accurately, especially a client preference for specific products.

Canadian companies understand the maintain need for suppliers to fine relations during the sales and post-sales periods. Therefore, Vietnamese exporters should know that Canada’s garments market is only equal to 10 percent of the US market, so they can meet big orders.

In addition, importers and exporters often conduct transactions based on product samples so these samples must strictly follow Canadian regulations and standards on safety, durability, weight, material and quality. Importers often use samples to attract the attention of wholesalers and retail dealers.

Vietnamese businesses can get information about the levy of taxes on individual products on the website of the Canada Border Services Agency at www.cbsa-cbsa.gc.ca/menu-e.html. They can also find details of products, certificates of origin, regulations relating to the free trade agreement signed by Canada and tariffs systems in developing countries like MFN, GPT and LDCT at www.apparel.ca.

Other regulations governing garments trading include the Law on Textile Labeling and Advertisement and Customs Law. Products made from animal skin can be only imported into the country in special cases.
