Businesses told to become more involved

The HCM City Union of Business Associations has to support its members more effectively and increase their involvement in its activities, a meeting heard yesterday.

The fifth congress of the association reviewed the association’s work during the 2004-09 period and set plans to 2014.

During the last five years, the association has played an important role in creating a "bridge" between the municipal government and businesses, communicating Government policies to enterprises and conveying the latter’s grievances to the authorities.

It has carried out many programmes including professional training courses, trade promotions, meetings and consultancy services to help corporate members raise their competitiveness and expand their markets, according to Ngo Van Ich, association deputy chairman.

It has built a website to publicise information about its activities and create a trade bridge for businesses.

The association has so far admitted 13 new members, raising the total membership to 30. It raised more than VND39 billion (US$2.1 million) for social and charitable activities.

However, the association’s operation during the last five years had also exposed many shortcomings, participants said at the two-day congress that ended yesterday.

Many association members paid scant attention to its activities, and one reason was that several programmes designed to support enterprises were not effective, Ich said.

"The association will improve its dissemination of Government policies and related information to members in the coming term", said association chairman Huynh Van Minh.

"It will also continue to gather ideas from enterprises towards helping the Government make its policies more effective."

The association will organise more seminars, fairs, training courses and trade promotion programmes to support businesses.

Nguyen Hoang Quan, the municipal People’s Committee Chairman, said the city appreciated the association’s achievements and was committed to creating the most favourable conditions for businesses to develop.

Besides, the municipal government would regularly meet with businesses to address their difficulties.

Quan presented the Labour Order, Third Class to both the association and Ich. Established in 1989, the association aims to represent and protect the legitimate interests of its members and to promote the growth and development of businesses, especially small and medium enterprises.
